Mobile Search: Advanced Statistics

Search Engine Land recently printed some awesome charts about mobile search by vertical category. It shows precisely why it is so important that you have a mobile optimized website.

In the important restaurant category, for instance, 59% of smartphone owners searched for a restaurant via their mobile phone, thus making restaurants the highest category of all those analyzed.

Mobile searchers are tending to look for rather basic information such as hours of operation, address, and directions.  In fact, in the same restaurant category, 47% were looking for restaurant directions, because they have a primary need right now.  They are hungry!

It certainly makes sense that grocery searchers didn’t want to travel too far or their milk might get warm, but if you are going to see a Springsteen concert, heck we’d travel pretty far!

ATS Braces for Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy is already pounding the New Jersey coastline and the worst is yet to come as landfall is not expected until late tonight.

As Hurricane Sandy barrels toward the New Jersey coast, we at Advanced Telecom Services are in the office today preparing for its impact on our offices just 9 miles west of Philadelphia.  Most of our staff is here today, but it is likely that our offices will be closed on Tuesday.  We are also anticipating power outages, possibly lengthy ones, in our office and in our employee homes.

The good news is that your mobile or IVR services should not feel the impact of Sandy.  Our text message marketing website is backed up at a hosting location in Florida and the engineering team has moved it from Philadelphia to this location until the damage from the storm is over.  Moreover, our IVR programs are hosted in Rochester and Los Angeles — areas that should be immune from the wrath of Hurricane Sandy.

Thank you for your patience during this state of emergency.

We will do our best to respond as quickly as possible to your needs.  Should you need anything on Tuesday or any days when the office is closed or out of power, please contact Scott at 267-456-3956 or Bob 610-513-0900.  Also, send an email to sales at advancedtele dot com.

Mobile Marketing for Minor League Baseball

Advanced Telecom Services provides mobile marketing solutions for the minor league baseball team, Camden Riversharks.  ATS sponsored a game this season and invited employees and customers to take in the Riversharks contest on July 24 versus the Lancaster Barnstormers.  In the picture above, Finley, the Riversharks mascot, visits with ATS customers and staff.

Fans can join the Riversharks text message club by texting SHARKS to 84444.

The Riversharks keep in touch with their fans via a text message marketing club which updates fans on the team, the schedule, and special events.  In addition, the Riversharks use a Custom QR Code developed by Advanced Telecom Services to promote the mobile website that was also developed by ATS.  The Riversharks custom QR Code was selected by CNN as one of the 23 coolest QR Codes in the country.

OBAMA WINS…in Most Money Raised via Text Messaging

President Obama has out-earned Governor Romney 73 to 1 in text message donations.

Earlier this year, it was announced that politicians were able to raise money through text message marketing for what is known as premium SMS.  Premium SMS uses a short code and consumers text a keyword to the short code to, in this case, make a donation to a politician.

President Barack Obama has always been one to embrace new technology and he rode this considerable advantage to a victory over John McCain in the 2008 election.  Well, apparently, he’s at it again.

According to information released by Roll Call, the President has paid the premium SMS provider $84,655 while Governor Romney has paid $1152.  The figures come from statistics released by the Federal Election Commission.  Roll Call estimates that Obama has earned $836,550 from text message donations while Romney has earned just $1520.

Around the ATS Office: Twitter Upgrade

This week, Advanced Telecom Services @Advancedtelecom, Advanced Mobile @AdvancedMobile, 84444 @84444, and Cars2go @Cars2go_ began redesigning their Twitter accounts.  All four Twitters now have custom icons for their pictures which creates a cleaner appearance.

Also, new on each Twitter page is a custom background.  Rather than continue to use Twitter’s generic backgrounds, a colorful background now sticks out behind the news feed.  Each page has its own color scheme that coordinates with the other features that were redesigned including the icon and QR codes.

When you open the Advanced Telecom Twitter, one of the first things you notice is the QR code in the top left of the screen. This new addition to each page links directly to the respective site.  Accessing is just a QR scan away.

If you are following any of these Twitter pages, you may also notice the increase in content.  Boosting the number of tweets and retweets per hour has increased the number of followers on each page.  You can follow any of these pages by clicking their respective links above.

Around the ATS Office: SIGNS OF THE PAST

During the dot com boom, the company briefly changed its name to from Advanced Telecom Services. Internet products, including our ringtone business, were part of the Advanced Internet company that was sold to Zim Corporation.

A more modern sign than the one used in Taiwan was patterned after hockey arena dasherboards and promoted of the dot come era.

On top of the sign is the sign originally used in the Spark Network Services office in Evanston, Illinois.  Advanced Telecom Services acquired Spark from CBS Radio (then Infinity Broadcasting) in 2005.
